MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

Addressing Sleep Apnea and its Effects on Overall Well-being

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or shallow breathing during sleep. It can result from obstructed airways, neurological issues, or other factors. Sleep apnea poses various dangers, including daytime fatigue, impaired cognitive function, increased risk of accidents, cardiovascular problems, and decreased quality of life.

When experiencing symptoms such as loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, gasping for air during sleep, or witnessing apnea episodes, it is advisable to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. An ENT can evaluate the condition, conduct tests like a sleep study, and recommend suitable treatments, such as lifestyle modifications, oral appliances, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, or surgery to alleviate sleep apnea and improve overall health.

Addressing Sleep Apnea and Its Effects on Overall Well-Being

Sleep apnea can significantly impact your well-being, wreaking havoc on your physical and mental health. This sleep disorder disrupts regular breathing patterns during slumber, causing repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night. The consequences are far-reaching. Physically, sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and morning headaches. It increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Untreated sleep apnea can also impair cognitive function, memory, and concentration, affecting performance at work or school. Mood disturbances, such as irritability, depression, and anxiety, can also ensue. Addressing these concerns is crucial for a person's overall health and quality of life. Seeking medical attention is essential if experiencing symptoms like loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, or waking up abruptly with a choking sensation.

Additionally, if bed partners notice frequent breathing interruptions or sleep disruptions - professional evaluation becomes imperative. Early intervention can lead to effective treatment strategies, including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, lifestyle changes, or surgery, alleviating the burdens of sleep apnea and restoring well-being.

Know When To Consult an ENT

Are your nights plagued by snoring, gasping for air, and morning fatigue? If so, it's time to heed the warning signs of sleep apnea and seek professional help. Don't ignore the dangers that lurk beneath the surface of your restless slumber. A consultation with a trusted medical expert is essential when your partner witnesses prolonged breathlessness during sleep, leaving you with oxygen deprivation.

When excessive daytime sleepiness jeopardizes your focus and work performance or even endangers your driving abilities, seek a professional's guidance. Remember, if you experience frequent morning headaches, mood swings, or unexplained weight gain, these could relate to untreated sleep apnea. Don't let this silent menace compromise your well-being. Take charge, consult an ENT, and reclaim the restful nights you deserve.
