MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

The Role of ENT Specialists in Sleep Apnea Diagnosis and Treatment

Woman cannot sleep because of her husband snore

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These pauses can reduce oxygen levels, disrupt rest, and increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and daytime fatigue. At Midwest ENT in Chicago, IL, Dr. Gordon J. Siegel can help patients identify the underlying causes of sleep apnea and develop personalized treatment plans to improve sleep quality and overall health.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea most commonly occurs when the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep. This condition, known as obstructive sleep apnea, often results from relaxed throat muscles, enlarged tonsils, nasal obstruction, or structural abnormalities in the airway. Symptoms may include loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, and persistent daytime sleepiness. A lack of any these symptoms does not necessarily mean that someone does not have significant sleep apnea.

Because many patients are unaware of breathing interruptions, sleep apnea is often first noticed by a partner or family member. Early evaluation is important to prevent long-term health complications.

How ENT Specialists Diagnose Sleep Apnea

ENT specialists play a key role in identifying anatomical and functional factors that contribute to sleep apnea. Dr. Gordon J. Siegel performs comprehensive evaluations that include reviewing medical history, assessing nasal and throat structures, and examining airflow patterns. Diagnostic testing may involve sleep studies, imaging, or endoscopic evaluations to pinpoint areas of obstruction. Dr. Siegel is able to provide a simple device to take home from his office that allows you to diagnose sleep apnea in the comfort of your own home, eliminating cumbersome uncomfortable sleep studies done in a sleep lab.

Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea

Treatment depends on the severity of sleep apnea and its underlying cause. Some patients benefit from lifestyle changes such as weight management, sleep position adjustments, and nasal therapies. Others may require medical devices, including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, to maintain open airways during sleep.

When structural problems contribute to airway blockage, surgical procedures, including the Inspire Sleep Implant device, to open the airway or address nasal obstruction may be recommended. ENT-guided treatment focuses on restoring normal breathing patterns and improving long-term sleep quality.

Long-Term Management and Follow-Up

Managing sleep apnea is an ongoing process. Regular follow-up visits allow providers to monitor progress, adjust treatment plans, and address new symptoms as they arise. Continued care helps reduce fatigue, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance overall well-being.
