MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

Types of Sinus Surgeries: Choosing the Right Procedure for You

Sinus Surgery Procedure on Surgery room with the doctor

Chronic sinus issues can affect more than just your comfort — they can impact sleep, productivity, and overall quality of life. When medications and lifestyle changes are no longer enough, sinus surgery may be the next step. At Midwest ENT in Chicago, IL, our team, including otolaryngologist Gordon J. Siegel and audiologist Shendy Ng Cen, offers a variety of procedures tailored to each patient’s specific needs.

Understanding Sinus Surgery

Sinus surgery is designed to restore proper drainage and function of the sinuses, reduce inflammation, and alleviate chronic symptoms such as congestion, pressure, headaches, and recurring infections. The type of procedure recommended depends on the severity and location of sinus issues, as well as underlying conditions like nasal polyps, structural abnormalities, or chronic sinusitis.

Common Types of Sinus Surgeries

1. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS):
FESS is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small endoscope to remove blockages and improve sinus drainage. It is often recommended for chronic sinusitis that doesn’t respond to medications and allows patients to recover with minimal discomfort.

2. Balloon Sinuplasty:
Ideal for patients with narrowed sinus passages, balloon sinuplasty involves inserting a small balloon into the sinus passageways and inflating it to widen the passage. This technique is less invasive and generally allows for quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery.

3. Septoplasty:
When a deviated septum contributes to chronic sinus problems, septoplasty can correct the alignment of the nasal septum, improving airflow and reducing congestion. This procedure is often combined with other sinus surgeries for comprehensive relief.

4. Polypectomy:
For patients with nasal polyps, a polypectomy removes these growths to reduce obstruction and inflammation. This procedure can help restore proper sinus function and improve symptoms such as nasal blockage and loss of smell.

Choosing the Right Procedure

Determining the best sinus surgery involves a thorough evaluation by an ENT specialist. Dr. Gordon J. Siegel will assess your symptoms, medical history, and imaging results to recommend a procedure that aligns with your unique condition. Audiologist Shendy Ng Cen can also provide insight into hearing-related concerns, which can sometimes be linked to sinus issues.

A personalized approach ensures that you receive the most effective treatment with the least downtime, helping you return to daily activities quickly and comfortably.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery performed. Patients are generally advised to follow post-operative instructions carefully, including nasal irrigation, avoiding strenuous activity, and attending follow-up appointments. Proper aftercare helps prevent complications and ensures optimal results.
