MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

The Role of the Inner Ear in Balance

Dizziness and balance issues are often brushed aside as signs of fatigue or dehydration, but they can also point to underlying conditions in the ear, nose, and throat system. Because the inner ear plays such a vital role in maintaining balance, an ENT specialist is often the first step for patients who feel unsteady, lightheaded, or prone to falls.

The Role of the Inner Ear in Balance

Hidden deep in the ear is the vestibular system, a network of canals and sensory cells that relay information to the brain about movement and spatial position. When this system malfunctions, balance is disrupted. Inner ear infections, Ménière's disease, or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are common causes of dizziness and instability that can interfere with daily routines.

Symptoms That Shouldn’t Be Ignored

Occasional lightheadedness may not be cause for concern, but ongoing or severe symptoms require medical evaluation. Warning signs include a spinning sensation (vertigo), difficulty walking in a straight line, nausea or vomiting with dizziness, sudden changes in hearing, or unexplained frequent falls. These issues can make it challenging to drive, work, or even manage daily life safely.

How ENTs Evaluate Balance Concerns

An ENT evaluation begins with a detailed medical history and physical exam. Hearing tests, balance function testing, and imaging may be used to determine the source of the problem. Pinpointing whether the issue stems from the ear, nervous system, or another underlying condition is critical to creating an effective treatment plan.

Treatment and Relief Options

Treatment varies depending on the cause of the balance problem. BPPV, for example, can often be corrected with simple head-positioning maneuvers to reset the inner ear crystals. Infections may require medication, while chronic vestibular disorders may respond best to physical therapy and ongoing management strategies. In some cases, a combination of approaches provides the most lasting relief.

Taking the First Step Toward Stability

Living with dizziness or imbalance is more than an inconvenience—it affects safety, independence, and overall quality of life. Consulting an ENT specialist ensures balance problems are accurately diagnosed and effectively treated, helping patients regain confidence and stability in their daily activities.
