MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

Voice Therapy for Chronic Hoarseness

Chronic hoarseness can be more than just an inconvenience, it may signal an underlying issue with your vocal cords or voice box. If you’ve been experiencing persistent hoarseness for weeks or months, voice therapy could be the solution you need to restore your voice and improve your vocal health. Seeing an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist is the first step toward understanding the cause and finding relief.

What Causes Chronic Hoarseness?

Chronic hoarseness can result from a variety of factors, including vocal strain, acid reflux, allergies, or even conditions like vocal cord nodules or polyps. Prolonged hoarseness may also be linked to lifestyle habits, such as smoking or overuse of the voice. Identifying the root cause is essential for effective treatment, and an ENT specialist can perform a thorough evaluation to determine what’s affecting your voice.

How Voice Therapy Can Help

Voice therapy is a specialized approach to treating chronic hoarseness by improving how you use your voice. A speech-language pathologist or voice therapist works with you to develop techniques that reduce strain on your vocal cords, improve breath support, and promote healthy vocal habits. These exercises can help restore your voice, prevent further damage, and reduce the risk of recurring hoarseness.

What to Expect During Voice Therapy

Voice therapy sessions are tailored to your specific needs and the underlying cause of your hoarseness. You’ll learn exercises to strengthen your vocal cords, improve resonance, and manage any contributing factors like acid reflux or improper vocal technique. With consistent practice and guidance, many patients see significant improvement in their voice quality and comfort.

When to See an ENT Specialist

If your hoarseness has lasted longer than two weeks or is accompanied by other symptoms like throat pain or difficulty swallowing, it’s time to consult an ENT specialist. Early intervention can prevent further complications and help you regain your voice more quickly.

Take the First Step Toward a Healthier Voice

Chronic hoarseness doesn’t have to hold you back. Voice therapy, guided by an ENT specialist, can help you restore your voice and protect your vocal health. Schedule an appointment today to explore your options and find relief.
