MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

How Allergies Can Lead to Chronic Sinus Issues

Woman-covering-face-possibly-due-to-allergy-symptoms.

Many people face allergies, whether seasonal allergies brought on by pollen or year-round allergies triggered by dust, mold, or pet dander. While allergies are often seen as a mere inconvenience, they can have a much more significant impact on your health, especially when left untreated. One of the lesser-known but concerning effects of allergies is their ability to lead to chronic sinus issues.

How Allergies Can Affect Your Sinuses

Before exploring how allergies affect the sinuses, it’s important to understand what the sinuses are and their function. Your sinuses are air-filled cavities behind your forehead, eyes, nose, and cheeks. These cavities are lined with a mucous membrane that produces mucus to help filter dust, bacteria, and other particles from the air you breathe. When your sinuses become inflamed or infected, this is known as sinusitis, which can cause pain, pressure, and difficulty breathing.

Allergic rhinitis, known as hay fever, occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander. When you inhale these allergens, your immune system releases histamines, which cause inflammation and irritation of the nasal passages. This inflammation can extend into the sinuses, leading to blocked sinus passages and increased mucus production.

If you already suffer from allergies, you may be at a higher risk of developing chronic sinusitis. When allergens trigger repeated bouts of inflammation in the nasal and sinus passages, the mucous membranes in your sinuses can become irritated and swollen. This creates an environment where mucus can’t drain properly, leading to mucus buildup in the sinuses. The accumulation of mucus can become a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the risk of bacterial sinus infections.

People with allergies are also more sensitive to environmental factors like temperature changes, humidity, and pollution. These external factors can further irritate the sinuses and exacerbate allergy-related inflammation. Adding pressure on inflamed sinus passages can lead to chronic sinus discomfort and recurrent sinus infections.
