MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

The Role of an ENT in Treating Hearing Loss

Otolaryngologist-Examining-Patient-with-Hearing-Loss

Hearing loss is a prevalent condition that affects millions of individuals, impacting their quality of life and communication abilities. While many people associate hearing loss with aging, it can occur at any age due to various factors, including genetics, environmental noise, infections, and underlying health conditions. If you’re starting to deal with hearing loss, it’s important to see your ENT doctor so that they can diagnose and manage your condition and hopefully stop it from progressing and worsening over time.

Treating Hearing Loss With Your ENT Doctor

Hearing loss can be classified into different types. The first is conductive hearing loss. This occurs when sound cannot efficiently travel through the outer ear canal to the eardrum and the tiny bones of the middle ear. Common causes include ear infections, fluid in the middle ear, earwax buildup, and structural abnormalities.

Another form of hearing loss is sensorineural hearing loss. This type results from damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve pathways to the brain. Causes may include exposure to loud noise, aging, certain medications, and genetic factors. The last type is mixed hearing loss, a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

Your ENT doctor is trained to diagnose and treat ear, nose, and throat disorders. The first step in addressing hearing loss is a thorough evaluation by an ENT specialist. They will take a detailed history of your symptoms, including when you first noticed the hearing loss, any associated symptoms (such as tinnitus or dizziness), and any relevant medical conditions or medications. From there, they will physically examine your ears and look for any visible issues.

Sometimes, your ENT doctor may refer you for a comprehensive hearing test conducted by an audiologist. This testing assesses your hearing ability across various frequencies and helps determine the type and severity of your hearing loss.

Once a diagnosis is made, your ENT doctor will discuss appropriate treatment options. Typically, this first involves treating the root cause of your hearing loss. You may need antibiotics or antihistamines to deal with ear infections. Other options are using devices to help amplify the hearing that you do have. This can be done using hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Hearing loss is often progressive, so regular follow-up appointments with your ENT doctor are essential for monitoring your hearing health and adjusting treatment plans as needed. This ongoing management can help optimize your hearing abilities and overall quality of life.
