MIDWEST ENT UPDATE 9/29/2020

As we approach fall and winter, we wish to update you on your ear nose and throat health. We recommend that you have your humidifiers inspected and cleaned. If you don't have one, this may be a good time to purchase. When heaters go on, so should humidifiers. In addition, nasal saline sprays and netty pots often times aid in healthy noses and throats. It is becoming increasingly well known how important good nasal breathing is for our overall health. I am sending a link to a recent story aired on CBS News, featuring James Nestor, author of the recent book, "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art". It is very insightful and I hope you enjoy it.

We continue to take very strict COVID precautions. We have had no cases as a result anyone coming to our office or having surgery with us at Northwestern Hospital.
Flu season is rapidly approaching and strongly encourage the flu vaccine.
We are very pleased with our results of the Inspire(inspiresleep.com)procedure for sleep apnea. This has proven to be an excellent outpatient procedure for those who are not getting good results with CPAP.
As always, we offer a full range of services for your hearing health. We provide the most current technology for testing your hearing and providing the most appropriate hearing aids for each individual.
Please feel free to call the office(312-988-7777) for further information on all of the above or to set up an appointment. You may also send individual emails through our patient portal.

Wishing you all good health and safety,

Gordon J. Siegel, M.D.,FACS

What To Know About Balloon Sinuplasty

Patients who need balloon sinuplasty, can make no better choice than Dr. Gordon Siegel at Midwest ENT in Chicago, IL. Dr. Siegel is an experienced and board-certified physician, and together with our dedicated team of professionals, he offers complete ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care.

Defining Balloon Sinuplasty

Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that provides relief for patients suffering from chronic sinusitis. This procedure derives its name from the small balloon used to open the sinuses, inserted through the nose, the helps restore normal sinus function. Once the sinuses have been opened, the balloon is deflated and removed.

Who Is a Candidate for Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is not suitable for everyone. This is why Dr. Siegel at Midwest ENT, providing balloon sinuplasty to Chicago, IL patients, will assess you to determine whether you are suffering from:

  • Recurring sinusitis that doesn’t clear up with medication.
  • Headaches due to sinus inflammation around the eyes
  • Bad breath and/or a poor taste in your mouth
  • Long-term difficulty breathing through your nose.

What to Expect During a Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure

A balloon sinuplasty procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient environment. This means that you should not eat or drink anything for at least 12 hours before the surgery.

You will be checked in once you arrive for your procedure, and a quick health check will be performed. When it is your turn, you will be taken to the procedure room, where you will be sedated. After you are asleep, Dr. Siegel will insert a tiny balloon using a catheter through your nose to dilate the sinuses. Once they are open, Dr. Siegel will remove the balloon, and you will be taken to the recovery room.

When you are properly awake and aware, you will be released to go home. Balloon sinuplasty is not a painful procedure, and you should not experience more than mild discomfort and some discolored nasal drainage afterward. This can be treated with prescribed or over-the-counter medication and saline spray.

Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty

The main benefit of balloon sinuplasty is that the sinuses are open and function correctly. It is a permanent procedure, so it only needs to be done once.

Additionally, it is a minimally invasive procedure: nothing is removed from your body, and it is considered very safe. Finally, recovery time is minimal and does not require extended time away.
